For the last 12 years, the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Arambol village, Goa, is making efforts of to ensure a plastic-free village. It recently held a two-day cleanliness-cum-awareness drive in this regard. Bags of cigarette packets, chewing tobacco sachets, plastic bottles, packets of chips, polythene bags were collected from Khalchawada, Arambol tinto, Arambol beach, Madhalawada and Girkarwada. Villagers were urged to segregate their dry and wet wastes at source to reduce the burden on dumps.
April 6, 2013, Proposal to plant over 2.10 lakh saplings in Allahabad
In an effort to retain the green cover of the city, district authorities have mooted the proposal of planting as many as 2.10 lakh saplings. Officials are also seeking cooperation of masses, non-government and social organisations. The district authorities claim that more than 95% saplings of set target would survive. The Saaf India project, co-founded by the Amsterdam-based duo of Shammy Jacob, 37, and Dinesh Shonak, 33, hopes to tackle this mountain of a problem through the battle of the mind. It seeks to engage with passengers and railway staff and bring about an attitudinal change whereby garbage generation is contained and its disposal channelised. The project is currently in an exploratory phase; Jacob and Shonak have already clocked 10,000 miles of railway routes tracking Indian garbage-disposal habits.

March 19, 2013, NGOs to take responsibility for cleaning 12 Ganga Ghats
The responsibility of cleaning and maintenance of 12 ghats located along the river Ganga will be given to seven NGOs, a senior official said.
The ghats including Dasaswamedh Ghat, Sheetla Ghat, Rajendar Prasad Ghat, Prayag Ghat, Manmandir Ghat, Meer ghat, Munshi Ghat, Bhonsle Ghat, Guleriya Ghat, Ganesh ghat and Shivala Ghat will be taken care of by the NGOs for a period of three years, Divisional Commissioner Chanchal Kumar Tiwari said, while approving the proposal yesterday.

Worried at the increasing pollution in the Ganga, the All World Gayatri Pariwar, a religious group with followers in different cities, Sunday initiated a programme for the cleaning and conservation of the holy river. The programme, named Nirmal Ganga Abhiyan-Bhagirathi Jalabhishek began with a two-day special training camp at Shantikunj-Haridwar. On the occasion, manager of Shantikunj Haridwar, Gaurishankar Sharma, asserted that the process of cleaning the Ganga would begin with the cleaning of one's own self.
Under the Nirmal Ganga Abhiyan (clean Ganga campaign) volunteers of the Gayatri Pariwar would reach every home to expand public awareness. Over 30,000 citizens of Mysore from different walks of life came together on Sunday 17 March 2013 to be part of the “Let’s do it!” movement and cleaned up the entire city in just four to five hours. Surprisingly, by noon, they managed to collect 191 truckloads of garbage strewn all across the city including the roads and open spaces. The volunteers went about the task by forming 650 clusters in the 65 Corporation wards. The campaign comes in the light of the failure of solid waste management efforts in Bengaluru, and to prevent a repeat of such a mess in Mysore, which is a popular tourism destination.read more...

The fourth phase of Sabarimala Clean Up drive, organized by Mata Amritanandamayi Math (MAM), completed on March 17th 2013. The cleaning took place for the last two days. The Sannidhanam area was divided into 10 different zones and volunteers were divided into different groups who were deployed in these zones.
